When it begins operations in 2007, it will produce roughly 15 Petabytes (15 million Gigabytes) of data annually, which thousands of scientists around the world will access and analyse.
The mission of the LHC Computing Project (LCG) is to build and maintain a data storage and analysis infrastructure for the entire high energy physics community that will use the LHC.

The internet could soon be made obsolete by a new "grid" system which is 10,000 times faster than broadband connections.

The first phase of an ambitious computing network designed to handle huge amounts of data has been launched.

The network, dubbed the Grid, has been set up by the Cern labs in Geneva to tap into the processing power of computers in 12 countries.

The aim of the project is to handle data from an experiment on how the Universe began.

Cern believes the Grid could eventually provide people access to a vast pool of processing power from their desktops.

Next-gen net

The idea behind Grid technology is to link up computers around the world over the internet to create a new generation of enormously powerful machines.

The networks are needed because some problems in science are just too large for any one machine to tackle by itself.

Cern's Grid will initially be used to handle the terabytes of data generated by an upcoming particle accelerator called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The technology now being deployed for particle physics will ultimately change the way that science and business are undertaken in the years to come

Ian Halliday, PParc

The LHC is going to test the Big Bang theory by smashing protons together at high energies.

The data generate by the experiment are expected to fill the equivalent of more than 20 million CDs a year and some 70,000 computers would be needed to analyse the data.

With the LHC Computing Grid project, scientists will be able to access computing resources across the world as though they were on their machine.

"The Grid enables us to harness the power of scientific computing centres wherever they may be to provide the most powerful computing resource the world has to offer," said Les Robertson, project manager at Cern.

'Profound effect'

The first phase covers processing resources from research institutes in 12 countries - the UK, the US, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Russia, Spain, and Taiwan.

The final goal of the Grid is to bring together the computing power of scientific centres across the world to create a virtual supercomputer network.

In the long-term, Grid technology is predicted to revolutionise the world of computing. Ultimately it is expected to be able to provide huge processing power on tap to anyone.

"The technology now being deployed for particle physics will ultimately change the way that science and business are undertaken in the years to come," said Ian Halliday, Chief Executive of the UK's Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council, (PParc).

"This will have a profound effect on the way society uses information technology, much as the worldwide web did."

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is being built in a circular tunnel 27 km in circumference. The tunnel is buried around 50 to 175 m. underground. It straddles the Swiss and French borders on the outskirts of Geneva.

It planned to circulate the first beams in May 2008. First collisions at high energy are expected mid-2008 with the first results from the experiments soon after.

Large Hadron Collider: The Discovery Machine

A global collaboration of scientists is preparing to start up the greatest particle physics experiment in history

Big string new revolution in Email

BigString is a new service that lets you have better control over the emails you send out to others.
With this service, you can self-destruct or change an email that’s already been sent and/or read. Instead of worrying about the messages you send to others being available in their inbox, you can now destroy them as a way to protect your privacy. In addition, BigString offers a way to prevent your personal identification info from remaining in someone else’s inbox as well, restricting private images or messages from being spread further online. You can also reword a message that’s already been sent, revise a document you’ve sent along, or set an expiration date for emails. As added protection, recipients are unable to
You’ll need to send messages from BigString in order to use this free service. Most of these options can only be chosen one at a time, so if you want a self-destructing message, it won’t be able to be recalled at a later time. There aren’t really many ways to let your recipients know that a message is going to self-destruct, so you may end up making a few people upset or just downright confused, especially if they ever associate BigString with you having something to hide. For things like self-destructing emails, the mail will remain in the recipients inbox, but the actual message will be deleted. Success of Web 2.0 has paved way to a relatively new concept known as Mobile 2.0. Mobile 2.0 concept defines the use of mobile phones to access the web 2.0 content wirelessly though WAP, GPRS, EDGE or WIFI connectivity. For example using of mobile phones to write blogs, to upload pictures to Flickr, read RSS feeds or even keeping in touch with your friends using social networks can be seen as Mobile 2.0. Mobile 2.0 is still a technology in its making and has a wide scope in reaching wide range of users. A key attributes for rapid development in Mobile 2.0 is the fact that mobile phones are becoming more and more sophisticated and at the same time powerful network capabilities allow mobile devices offer more functionalities. It is estimated that there are 3 times more mobile phones in the world compared to the number of PC's .All these facts contributes positively to the future of Mobile 2.0 and wider opportunities for Mobile 2.0 content providers.

Rise of Web 2.0 provided the groundwork for many successful multi-billion dollar businesses such as Facebook and Youtube. Mobile 2.0 on the other hand is in path to become a ground work for many successful businesses. We have already seen trends by existing Web 2.0 content providers such as Facebook, mySpace, and Youtube moving into the Mobile 2.0 markets to cater the Mobile users who access this web content. Given below is the Facebook home page accessed by a mobile phone using 3G services.

    (Source www.readwriteweb.com)

Many other Web 2.0 content providers are already laying groundwork to enter the Mobile 2.0 market. An example of this would be Google acquiring Zingku a mobile 2.0 content provider which provides Mashups, RSS feeds and many other features on mobile phones. However industrial analyst predicts that it would be hard for the existing web 2.0 content providers to converge into Mobile 2.0 arena as it requires building of new capabilities in order to perform well in the market. Diagram below illustrates the process of convergence of web 2.0 content providers into the Mobile 2.0 arena.

It is predicted that Mobile 2.0 would open up opportunities to mobile native service providers such as social networking services, micro blogging or even mobile Youtube's, explicitly for mobile users which can provide user interface and functionality that would suite better to mobile phones. Interesting trends are seen in new Mobile 2.0 centric start up companies as more and more new companies join to provide Mobile 2.0 services. These include social networking services such as Rummble and Mobiluck, micro blogging services such as Twitter and Jaiku, Video sharing services through QIK and ComVu and many other different kinds of mobile 2.0 services that are blooming up. Many mobile service operators are now moving into providing Mobile 2.0 services to its subscribers by becoming content providers to provider a platform for user collaboration and sharing of digital content such as videos and images with other subscribers. Mobile phone manufacturers such as Nokia have already taken steps to move into Mobile 2.0 arena by starting up services such as Nokia Podcasting to become a Mobile 2.0 content provider.

Mobile 2.0 is a service that knits together the current Web 2.0 with the mobile platform to create something new. It is clear that many of the current Web 2.0 content providers are eying on the Mobile 2.0 market and some have already entered whist others are laying groundwork to enter this blooming market. Many new mobile native content providers are emerging in the Mobile 2.0 industry and are expected to bring the Mobile 2.0 industry to a whole new dimension. In conclusion I would like to say that Mobile 2.0 has the potential of revolutionizing the way we use the Internet and services offered through Internet, it would bring about more flexibility and at the same time encourage more user collaboration by leveraging on mobility and offering better services than what we experience today.

Social networks - tomorrow's iTunes

Social networks have evolved from a new concept to a mainstream business activity involving not only young adults and tech enthusiast, but wide range of people from different age groups. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace currently have an accumulated member count of over 200 Million users. Social networking is currently been used as a way of promoting interpersonal collaboration within the users. However social network sites are adding on new features to provide a more value added service to be competitive in the industry. The main revenue model for social networking sites are through advertisement. Recent survey carried out in the UK, shows promising trends for social networks to act as content distribution platforms. Many of the content distributors such as iTunes which is specialized in online music sales, could loose its business to social networking sites if they are to carry out content distributors as a value added service. As shown by the Digital Entertainment Survey, social network users comprise of people from different age groups, however majority of its users are between the 20-24 age group. More information shown in the diagram below.

(source http://www.docuticker.com/?p=19791)

Impact of social network on the community has paved way for social networks to operate as a content distributor adding more value to the business model and at the same time strengthening its revenue model. Social networks are currently used as tool for content discovery. According to the survey nearly 30% total respondents and 50% of teenage girls occasionally use social networks to search for new music. whist nearly 25% of the users find out about movies and TV shows via peer recommendation. What is more promising is that 1 in every 5 purchase music based on peer recommendation and have search social networking websites in purchasing music. Survey also revealed that a 40% of the males between the ages of 20-24 years agreed that social networks could be the main way of accessing content if they are available through such websites.MySpace one of the largest online social networking website, has already taken steps to move into the business of content distribution. It is already negotiating with record companies such as Sony BMG, Universal Music, Warner Music and EMI. Even though MySpace already allows its users to listen to music content which are uploaded by different artists themselves, it is not been a successful way of content distribution over the internet.

Adding of new features to the existing business model of social networking websites can have tremendous impacts on pure content distributors such as iTunes. Social networking websites have the advantage over pure content distribution websites as social networks are used as a mode of information gathering before the purchase takes place. This built-in consumer base would allow a social network website to easily transform its business to become a content provider as long as the process of discovering a product to the point of purchase remains easy. In conclusion it can be said that several crucial changes would be made to how social network services operate with websites such as MySpace already taking the initiative in setting the foundation to become a content provider. Other social network websites such as Facebook, Hi5 and Badoo would soon follow into the business of content providing and would allow a social networking website to become a one stop shop for entertainment.

Google Analytics Benchmarking

Google analytics is a widely used web-tool that allows monitoring of web-traffic coming into a website. Google Analytics provides a comprehensive statistical analysis of the traffic flow relating to a given website. It has been used as a web traffic monitoring tool for both personal and business related website. On March 5th 2008 Google Analytics announced its newest addition known as Google Analytics Industry Benchmarking. Benchmarking is a tool that can be used by firms involved in digital business to compare its web statistics with other industry websites to get an idea on how well the website is performing. It allows a business to compare web statistics such as number of visits, page views, pages per visit, bounce rate and average time on site compared to other participating websites in the same industry. Google Analytics offer Benchmark service as an opt-in feature which would require potential businesses who needs industrial Benchmark data to share their own website statistics anonymously.

Google analytics benchmarking allows a businesses to compare web traffic with other vertical businesses in the same industry. It also allows comparing web traffic information with firms in different levels of the supply chain. It works as an up to date pool of resources that are available to a firm free of charge. Gathering these type of information through surveys or other media would cost valuable time and money and the data would be some what outdated in the fast moving digital business environment. This type of statistical information regarding the industry would allow a firm to identify whether the trends and fluctuations in demand are caused by changes in firms marketing strategy or by changes in demand in the industry as a whole. For example a website that is involved in online retailing services would need to know why it has high traffic on a particular day in a week, whether it is because of firm specific factor or its just an industry wide phenomena, in such a case Benchmarking would act as an important feature in providing the ability to isolate environmental factors when identifying the changes in business trends. Most importantly Google Analytics would allow a firm to know whether the business is keeping in track with the other businesses in the industry. This is a key factor which is important to a highly competitive business environment involving businesses that carry out similar trading in online marketplace. Similarly it allows a business to identifying cross functional promotional opportunities that can drive traffic to a website.
Google analytics is a service that needs to be opted in by the website administrator. By opting in to the service the administrator allows Benchmarking to share the statistics regarding the company website anonymously, contributing it to the pool of the related industrial data. Since the information would be aggregated to make an industrial based statistical measurement it is unable to discover individual business data from the pool of aggregate data. Shown below is an example of Google Analytics Benchmarking.

                (Source www.readwriteweb.com)

Benchmarking can be seen as the first step in data portability which allows a wide range of opportunities to any firm who is willing to take up the business model of providing anonymous data aggregation. Even though some 3rd party service providers such as Mint provides similar services which compares spending patterns of an individual to other users, it is the first time that such a Benchmarking tool is used to provide aggregate industrial information to a business who is willing to opt-into the service. However there are certain limitations of using Benchmarking web statistics. Not all firms would opt-in for such services. Successful firms may not opt-in for sharing their web statistics giving misleading information on the industrial web trends. On the other hand the assurance of anonymity may not always apply to firms which are in oligopolistic markets where only few firms dominate the business. Hence Benchmarking industrial figures would allow a firm to get hold of the data relating to other competitors in the market. In conclusion Google Analytics Benchmarking can be regarded as a business model which has potential of becoming a very dominant service to businesses all around the world who are involved in digital business. I feel that firms who participate in such Benchmarking program would gain valuable benefits in getting industrial statistics, even though its at a price of sharing your own data anonymously with your competitors.

Amazon Kindle

Amazon one of the leading e-commerce website which pioneered the revolution towards setting up pure play e-commerce website that only carry out online business. Amazon was initially specialized in selling books and later diversified in other forms of goods such as video games, music CD and movie DVD's. Amazon's newest addition to its product line is some what a different kind of a service known as Amazon Kindle. Amazon Kindle is a hand-held wireless device that can be primarily be used to read e-books. The device was launched in the US in November 2007 and is priced at $399. Kindle can run without any assistance of a computer and it uses EVDO technology to connect to the Amazon server which holds over 100,000 digital titles for download. Kindle downloads its e-contents from the Kindle store using a program known as Amazon Wispernet . Currently EVOD service for Kindle is provided by Sprint and is only available in the US. Kindle uses an electronic paper display and reads files of Kindle (AZW) format. Since Kindle displays data on electronic paper it reduces eye strain and allows a reader to read the content from Kindle as similar to an ordinary book. Book marking is allowed by Kindle as of an ordinary book. For more convenience, Kindle also automatically saves the place of the book which the user is currently reading. Kindle allows a very convenient way of moving from one page to another and Kindle allows the font size of the text to be changed according to users convenience. Kindle's digital content can be downloaded through the Kindle store. It offers a similar interface to Amazon.com where you could search for the needed book or just browse through the available books. Users would be able to see review, recommendations and would be able to read the first chapter of each book for free. Kindle comes with a keypad which allows a user to interact with the Kindle Store. Items can be downloaded through one click and would be available for reading in less than a minute. The content bought by users would also be backed up in the Amazon website in case the Kindle is lost or damaged. Best seller books can be purchased from Kindle at $9.99 or less and classics are sold at as low as $1.99. Content bought through the Kindle store would be delivered to the Kindle free of charge.

Kindle is not only used to download e-books it can be used to read daily newspapers, magazines, blogs and even wikipedia. Access to newspapers, magazines and blog’s can be subscribed by paying a monthly fee. Kindle also contains a free dictionary that can be used to look for definitions of words that come across while a user is reading e-contents on the Kindle. Kindle enables a user to search within the downloaded e-content inside the Kindle. Amazon offers an email based service that is able to convert JPEG, GIF, HTML, PNG, BMP and DOC files into Kindle compatible AZW format. Kindle can also supports Mp3 files and is also equipped with a web browser to surf the internet.

Amazon currently is unable to cater the demand for Kindle's. Even thought its yet to be introduced outside the us, it has made a great impact amongst the us population. Kindle would allow Amazon to deliver digital content directly to its users without any assistance of physical distribution channels. All in all Kindle would be able to change the way we read books, magazines and newspapers and would provide a great opportunity for Amazon to prosper within the framework of digital business.

Technical specifications of Kindle

Screen: 6" diagonal, 3.6"(Width) × 4.8"(Height), 600×800 pixels or 0.48 mega pixels.

Operating System : Linux.

Memory : 180 MB extendable using external SD memory.

Physical size 5.3" × 7.5" × 0.7".

Weight:10.3 oz (295G).

  Introductory video on Kindle

web 2.0 goes to work

Web 2.0 is a growing trend on the web space which facilitates inter-user collaboration through sharing of information. Many web 2.0 tools such as blogs and social networking sites were highly successful. However usage of web 2.0 are some what limited only to personal work. Even though web 2.0 tools such as social networks are able to attract millions of visitors to share information and socialize over the web space, it is yet to make a great impact on enterprise environment. There are some applications that provide enterprise level collaboration amongst the users through enterprise portals and social network services, however these applications lack the all important user-friendliness that are present in web 2.0 tools. Hence enterprise level applications are not as successful as other web 2.0 tools in encouraging user collaboration and active contribution of information. Worklight inc is a company that has a very good business idea which allows enterprise data to be viewed in web 2.0 formats. Its scalable and a secure solution that can be implemented within or outside the firewall. It allows bridging the gap between the complex enterprise resource management tools and easy to use web 2.0 applications that are used by internet users at home. Worklight isn't just taking enterprise software and making them more user friendly, they are taking actual web 2.0 tools such as Facebook, iGoogle and using them for business use. Worklight currently can work with 14 of the most common web 2.0 tools such as iGoogle ,Facebook ,RSS feeds and del.icio.us. Use of web 2.0 applications for business operations can have greater impact on employee productivity and encourages employees to be actively be involved in organizational related matters. Its is especially important to firms that need a high level of business communication to take place within the company entities. It also helps a firm to cut down its cost related to training staff on how to make use of traditional enterprise based tools, as web 2.0 applications are very user friendly and most of the internet users are familiar with how to work with such tools.

Worklight uses programs called 'Application Adapters' to extract information from internal data sources and enterprise applications. These 'Application Adapters' then converts the data to a format that can be represented by relevant web 2.0 applications. The information is then available in secure streams which can then be subscribed by the autherised users. Worklight offers several solutions for businesses. One of the most famous is known as Workbook™. Workbook is a secure enterprise overlay of Facebook. This combines Facebook capabilities and provides an interface to allow employees to share information and business messages with each other. Enterprise softwares such as SharePoint and Lotus Connections are available in the market that is able to provide social networking within an organization. However these softwares lack the all important user friendliness and is hard to be adopted by the employees. Existing familiarity and popularity of Facebook makes it easier for employees to adapt to and work productively.Given below is a screen shot of workbook™, as it shows how well the enterprise functions are embedded in the Facebook interface.

(Source www.readwriteweb.com)

Worklight offers different web 2.0 applications that are able to work with a variety of corporate applications such as SAP, ERP and CRM. Worklight makes use of RSS feeds and social bookmarks to bring related information to the employees whilst allowing the employees to query information from the server and share relevant information with the other employees. Worklight allows employees to personalize their home page hence define what data they want to see and how they want to see them. One example of this is the use of iGoogle as the employee portal. It allows employees to customize the functionalities hence only relevant information is displayed to the employees. The employees decide what data should be displayed on the page and how they should be displayed. Hence it would be easy for employees to manage the data for their own preferences. The information is shown in the form of RSS feeds that can be subscribed by the employees. Most important feature of Worklight is that it allows all these flexibilities while providing a higher level of security to the data. The data content is protected and are shared only with authorized users. The Worklight system is highly scalable hence it could be used by both small scale and large scale organizations in day to day business activities. Shown below is an example of the interface that allows RSS feed to be displayed via Worklight RSS reader.

(source : http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=4401)

In ever changing business environment productivity plays a crucial role in making an organization sucessful. Firms need to make plans on how well it can communicate its business information securely effiecently. Worklight provide a great enterprise solution for organisations that can allow them to be more productive, flexible and at the same time secure the information that are been exchanged by business entities. Worklight can be instrumental in bringing change to how we manage organisational data and communication, which could drastically effect the businesses as a whole.

Shown below is a demonstration on how Worklight works

Microsoft Silverlight

Interactive websites with animations and eye catching graphics are a common standard in the world of digital business. It is seen as a way of promoting websites and a way of advertising products sold online. Microsoft Silverlight™ is one such tool that a business which is involved in online business can use to enhance the attractiveness of a website. Microsoft Silverlight is a cross platform browser plugin which allows web applications to contain animations, rich quality multimedia content, interactive activities and vector graphics. Silverlight is a product that is entering a highly competitive market with existing products such as Adobe Flash, Java FX, Apple QuickTime and Adobe Shockwave. Silverlight is still new to this market, but its gaining momentum in terms of demand. Even though many web interaction systems and multimedia on the web is based on Adobe Flash and Java, the trend could change drastically due to the introduction of Silverlight. Silverlight displays graphics in vector based format, hence resizing of the browser will not compromise on the quality of the content. This is essentially important in displaying high resolution graphics that can be viewed in any screen size. Vector based display allows Silverlight applications to be used as high quality animated thumbnails which can be resized to full screen whenever the user wants to, without compromising on quality. Yet another important aspect of Silverlight is that it support encoding of High Definition (HD) audio and video, enabling high quality digital content to be brought to the customers. Silverlight not only helps existing businesses to advertise their products better, it allows new businesses to emerge. It allows businesses to stretch its boundaries and to allow them to provide services that involved high quality web content. It provides capabilities to create new business models such a youtube that can allow sharing of high quality multimedia content over the internet. Silverlight is platform and browser independent. Hence it gives the same user experience no matter on which browser the Silverlight application is running on.

Silverlight allows loading and manipulation of XML content through Document Object Model (DOC) Interface. Silverlight also allows textual content to be indexed and searched unlike other web plugins such as flash. Most importantly Silverlight works with all of the windows media technologies, in addition Silverlight support the VC-1 codec which has been the industrial standard for blue-ray discs and HD movies which allows Silverlight to bring the same high quality media experience into your web browser. Silverlight content can be made through Microsoft Expression Media Encoder which is a part of Microsoft Expression Media. It allows a very user-friendly approach to encode multimedia and digital content to Silverlight. Silverlight 2.0 which is yet to be released, will allow programming logic to be included in Silverlight applications. Any .net based language can be used to write the relevant programming logic to Silverlight applications.

Despite a late entrant to the market, Silverlight holds some essential features that could give a whole new meaning to way businesses are advertised and operated on the web. It would allow new bit based businesses to emerge and more rich quality content to be distributed to the users. However iTV didn't receive the expected demand as it required a computer running iTunes to be connected to iTV in order to download movies. On January 15 2008 Apple's CEO Steve Jobs announced a major upgrade to the existing iTV model that can bring the iTV onto a whole new level. This announcement was made at the Apple's Macworld 2008 event in San Francisco. The iTV 'take two' would be able download movies directly and watch it on TV without any assistance from another computer. Apple iTV also allows downloading music, podcasts and stream photos from .mac and flickr.

iTV's business model was a follow up of iTunes which was initially developed to download music on a pay per song basis. Cost of a song was as low as $0.99 which made iTunes a highly successful business model. Followed by the success of music sales on iTunes, iTunes moved into movie rentals where movies can be rented and viewed on notebook's, PC's and iPod's. iTV is an extension to the movies rentals through iTune. iTV allows the viewers to download and watch movies on TV in HD or Standard definition movie formats. It encourages the use of iTunes as a mode of renting movies when compared to renting them on DVD's from video parlor's. Even though online movie rental through iTunes was a successful model its capability to be sucessful in terms of market capitalization relied mainly on the ability to watch the rented movies on TV. iTV was able to provide this feature to the users who prefer watching movies on widescreen TV's rather than on their personal computers or on iPods.

Movies can rented as low as $2.99 for library titles and $3.99 for new releases. HD titles with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound would cost $1.00 extra. A movie rented can be viewed within 30 days. Once the movies is started it should be watch within 24 hours. The movie would be automatically deleted after it expires. Movies can be watched in less than a minute once they are been set to download depending on the internet speed. Movies from a wide range of leading studios such as Sony pictures, MGM,20th Century FOX, Universal studio, WB and many other studios can be rented through iTV. Availability of the movies in HD format would allow to maximize the viewing pleasure especially when watched on HD enabled televisions. iTV may lead to new era of entertainment as it would avoid the need to go to movie theaters as you could watch high quality movies in your own living room. iTV even allows you to transfer the movie to your Mac or to your IPod to watch the movie on the go. iTV's user-friendly interface allows even a non computer literate user to navigate through iTV menu and select a movie of the choice.

iTV specifications are as follows

Size and weight

Footprint: 7.7 by 7.7 inches (197 by 197 mm)

Height: 1.1 inches (28 mm)

Weight: 2.4 pounds (1.09 kg)

Processor and storage

Intel processor 1.0 GHz "Crofton" Processor

40GB or 160GB hard drive for storing content locally

Up to 50 hours (40GB) or 200 hours (160GB) of video

Up to 9,000 songs (40GB) or 36,000 songs (160GB)

Up to 25,000 pictures

         more specifications

Video on how to use iTV
